It’s The Journey That Matters, Not The Destination

Taking a walk and soaking up this precious time; after all, it’s the journey that matters and not the destination

Recently, one way we’ve been spending quality time together as a family is taking an early evening walk. Having just moved to a new city and started a new job that now has a longer commute, I haven’t quite been able to make it home for dinners. So what we started doing, to take advantage of the greater amount of space and more serene surroundings our new town has to offer is to take an after-dinner walk as a family. These have been a precious way for us to slow down, unplug, and just enjoy each other’s company.

What I particularly love about our walks is that we aren’t actually going anywhere. In fact, we are able to just go whichever direction we want, up whichever path, take whichever turn. We are walking together, exploring together, just simply being together. So much of our lives is focused on moving moving moving – trying to achieve this, trying to get there, trying to do that. And I just can’t help but wonder, in our intent focus on the destination, if we are missing out on what actually matters all along. And I think about the actual end – one day down the road – and I already know that what I’m going to long for are just the day to day rhythms of the normal hustle and bustle of our lives with our little ones right now.

So here’s to slowing down, holding those little hands, and redirecting our forward-looking eyes to looking toward one another. To soaking up the now. Because our daily walk, this daily journey, is really what it’s all about.
